IFA Redfish Tour Tybee pair compete in IFA Redfish Tour Championship
Posted by stardot on Thursday, November 12 @ 06:18:28 MST (59 reads)

By Donald Heath- SavannahNow.com

There's no secret about what you have to do.

Tybee Island residents James Moore and Stan Allen are preparing for the IFA Redfish Tour Championship in Orange Beach, Ala., by fishing the waters around Orange Beach.

Sun up to sun down.

It's the life of fishermen who take their sport seriously. There's $77,000 in prize money along with a 173 Ranger Ghost fishing boat valued at $42,000 to the top fishermen in the two-day, saltwater year-end event which begins Friday.

Moore figures his two-man team has won about $6,000 in prize money this season.

"That could all change Saturday afternoon," Moore said with a hint of optimism.

Moore and Allen arrived in Orange Beach about a week ago and have spent nearly 12 hours a day in literally unfamiliar waters, searching for something every fisherman in the tournament wants to find - the big redfish.

During the competition, teams will run boats as far as 100 miles away, hightailing to hopeful fertile fishing grounds before speeding back to Orange Beach with their catch.

Each team weighs its two best fish each day. The top two-day weight total is the winner.

"We're at quite a disadvantage because these waters are a lot different from home and we don't have the local information," Allen said. "But if we get lucky and find the right two (each day)..."

Not so leisurely fishing

For many, fishing is a calm, serene activity where the hopes of catching fish often balances with the hope of not spilling a Budweiser.

This weekend of fishing has nothing to do with that.

Fast boats will skim the bays, marshes and Gulf waters surrounding Orange Beach in an intense exploration of redfish.

"It's NASCAR on water," Moore said.

Every advantage is considered for prized nibbles.

Moore and Allen finished 18th in a one-day tournament at Orange Beach just a few weeks earlier to gain some practice time and familiarity with the area.

Allen says they talked with locals about area fishing. Water depths and temperature, wind, tides, even the position of the moon (fish don't eat during full moons, Moore said) come into play.

Moore said maintenance on the boat is a primary concern.

And there's a physical demand on your body.

"It's probably like running a half-marathon every day," Allen said.

"We probably spend 30 minutes in the morning stretching in preparation for a long day on the boat," said Moore, who will be fishing hurt this weekend.

He needed an epidural in his back to relieve the pain of a herniated disc.

He's had pain all season, but the back didn't stop him from fishing all three events in the Atlantic Division - one of six divisions for anglers from Texas to Florida that form the IFA Redfish Tour.

Moore and Allen placed second in Charleston, S.C.; ninth in Surf City, N.C.; and 13th in Morehead City, N.C., - the three Atlantic Division events - to qualify for the championship in Orange Beach.

Moore and Allen competed in three events in Florida as well and could win an additional $5,000 (the Ultra 6 Award) by winning Saturday's championship.

Staying grounded on water

"You can't do all this without a supportive wife," says Moore, admitting his wife April is nearby, well within listening distance.

The 40-year-old Moore has a full-time job as an engineer for Verizon Wireless.

Allen, 49, is a captain with the City of Savannah Fire Department. He also works as an inshore guide, running out of Chimney Creek.

Moore and Allen met while working as firefighters on Tybee.

Obviously, they share a craving for adventure.

But fishing also brings serenity.

"(Tuesday) was probably 75 degrees and out on the water it was as pretty as it gets," Allen said. "It kind of looked like home."

Moore says he's often thought about making a living completely through fishing. Right now, he's able to suppress those thoughts.

"If you do anything full time, it becomes work," he said.

GCAA Redfish Tour By a Fish Scale
Posted by stardot on Sunday, November 01 @ 05:41:26 MST (61 reads)

By Barnie White

The Gulf Coast Angler’s Association put a close to its inaugural season with a two day showdown on October 24th and 25th but not without some last minute fireworks. With a constantly changing weather forecast, thirteen teams competed for the coveted series championship and a mere 0.01 lbs separated the top two teams. Special thanks go out to the staff and management at Delta Marine for all the hospitality, burgers and chili during the weigh-in, and most of all the added bonus cash for first place!

Winning the event by a mere fish scale was Barnie White and Donald Garrettson. White/Garrettson, who were in 3rd place after day one managed to better their weight on day two with a large sack anchored by an 8.4 lbs. lunker bringing their two day weight to 31.31 lbs. The Blackfin skeg sponsored team used No Slack Tackle popping corks rigged with 1/8 oz. No Slack Tackle jig heads with 4” Gulp! Shrimp. Using their Ranger Banshee Extreme the team targeted shallow ponds with scattered grass to land their two fish limit every day. The team collected $3,120 including the day 2 Big Fish Pot of $120 and the $500 bonus added by Delta Marine.

The Teams sponsors also include: MotorGuide, Stay-n-Charge, Mann’s Bait Company, and The Box Light. In second place was the Team of the Year Bobby Abruscato and Scott Ritter. Fishing out of their Ranger 183 Ghost, Abruscato/Ritter used a two punch combo using top water and popping corks early in the morning and then sight casted their redfish with spinner baits tipped with Power Baits in the purple/chartreuse color later in the day. Ritter stated that on day two the cloud cover combined with a hard falling tide made for tough sight casting conditions.

The team collected $890 for their 2nd place finish including $120 for the 1st day Big Fish Pot with 30.30 lbs. Rounding out the top five were 3rd place, Paul Smith/Mike Daves (30.19 lbs./$460); 4th place James and Tim Craft (28.99 lbs./$310); and 5th place Larry and Renee’ Kirby with 28.28lbs.

Looking back on the Team of the Year race, the team of Bobby Abruscato and Scott Ritter won with a commanding 6 point lead and collected $860 for the honor topping the teams Paul Smith/Mike Daves (2nd) and Barnie White/Steve White (3rd). Abruscato/Ritter also won last year’s Team of the Year award in the Team Trails Redfish Circuit. Here is a recap of their finishes: Breton Sound 1/24, 4th place; Breton Sound 2/21, 1st place; Breton Sound 3/21, 12th place; Empire 6/6, 8th place; Empire 7/11, 4th place; Golden Meadow 8/15, 1st; and Pascagoula 10/3, 8th place.

Yeah, Well I Heard...... Hell’s Bay premieres smallest and largest skiffs
Posted by stardot on Wednesday, October 28 @ 06:21:49 MDT (61 reads)

...at Ft. Lauderdale Intl. Boat Show

Popular shallow water skiff company intros 12’ Skate and 18’ Neptune models; hosts renowned anglers Jose Wejebe of ESPN and book author Chico Fernandez

TITUSVILLE, Fla., --- Despite the recession, especially the marine industry’s severe downturn, Hell’s Bay Boatworks is continuing to expand its model lineup launching two new 2010 skiffs – its smallest and largest -- at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, Oct. 29 - Nov. 2.

The 10-year old Titusville, Fla., company which builds custom shallow-water performance skiffs has found two niche markets for their new boats, the Skate and the Neptune.

The Skate; a small, rugged shallow water performer

At 12 ft. - 9 inches in length with a 45 inch beam, the Skate, Hell’s Bay’s smallest craft is made with tough Kevlar and weighs just 250 lbs. Its draft is a mere 3 ½ inches with engine and six gallons of fuel. Hell’s Bay recommends a 9.9 or 15 hp two stroke tiller-steered outboard for power.

“It’s light and it’s versatile,” said Hell’s Bay boat designer and sales director Tom Gordon. “Beyond using it as a fishing tender on a yacht it can also be used for extreme shallow water fishing and as a hunting boat.

“The Skate can even be loaded into the back of a pickup truck if needed. It can also be useful in restricted no combustion motor zones where an electric trolling motor is allowed. Duck hunters will love it,” added Gordon.

The Skate features an easy clean non-skid deck, carpeted rod racks for four rods under the gunnels, Stiffy push pole holders, anodized poling platform with SeaDek top, custom aluminum trailer with spare tire, heavy duty rub rail, quiet and dry hatches with rubber gaskets, dry gutters and Moonlite hatch springs.

The Neptune; a performance skiff

At the other end of the Hell’s Bay spectrum is the Neptune. The Neptune is 18 ft. 6 inches in length, has a 78 in. beam, and draws just 10 inches of draft with a 150 HO Evinrude E-Tech outboard and a full tank of gas. The skiff weighs in at only 795 lbs. dry.

Its long list of features include a 38 gallon fuel tank, 30 gallon live well, 10 under-gunnel rod tubes and lots of dry storage.

Gordon said the Neptune will be popular for use in tournaments such as tarpon and redfish events in many coastal states.

“It’s designed for larger horsepower engines in the range of 115 to 150 hp and great for longer runs. It’s the first Hell’s Bay designed around speed,” he added.

Both boats are rigged and wired to ABYC standards and include a wide variety of color options for the hull and deck

With the Skate and the Neptune, Hell’s Bay now has ten models of shallow-water skiffs in the 12’ to 18’ range. For a look at all 10 models visit Hell’s Bay on the web at www.hellsbayboatworks.com

“We have the ideal skiff for every type of shallow water fishery,” said Hell’s Bay Boatworks owner and President Chris Peterson.

At the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, Hell’s Bay’s exhibit location is #2041 on the main floor of the convention center and at the Bahia Mar location Hell’s Bay will have one of its popular models, the Marquesa, on the bow of an Affinity Yacht, in slip #315 on the “C” dock.

Hell’s Bay continues to be involved and out front promoting

“These two boats are something we’ve been working on since Hell’s Bay acquired Gordon Boatworks,” said Peterson. “Tom Gordon had a loyal following during Hell’s Bay’s early years before forming Gordon Boatworks and now he’s back and in charge of design and sales here at Hell’s Bay.”

Gordon added enthusiastically, “I’m excited to finally be introducing the new Neptune to the shallow water fishing fraternity. This is a project that I have been passionately working on for more than 2 ½ years, from the initial design, prototype testing and refining the final rigging selections.”

“Our business remains excellent. It’s the continuing results of providing truly world class skiffs,” said Peterson. “Despite downsizing or closures at other boat builders across the U.S., we’ve been diligent, taking opportunities for promotions and marketing and involving ourselves in fishing and marine industry events.

“We’re passionate when we get out in front of fishing audiences with sponsorships and promotions to show off our shallow-water boat designs to equally passionate anglers and guides.”

The company has become heavily involved in IGFA, CCA and Bonefish Tarpon Trust events, along with sponsoring the FishStock tournament in New Smyrna Beach, several Redbone tournaments for CF research and numerous other fishing events.

Chico and Jose to make appearances at Hell’s Bay exhibit

Anglers at the boat show will have a chance to talk about their sport with two renowned fisherman; author Chico Fernandez and ESPN’s Spanish Fly host Jose Wejebe will each be in the Hell’s Bay exhibit at the Convention Center during the show.

Chico will be signing his book “Fly Fishing for Bonefish” from 1 – 4 p.m. on both Friday, Oct. 30th and Saturday, Oct. 31st.

Jose will be available to meet and for photos from 10 a.m. – 12 noon Saturday, Oct. 31st and Sunday, Nov. 1st.

Hell’s Bay Boatwork’s headquarters is located at 1520 Chaffee Drive in Titusville, Fla. You can contact Peterson at 321-383-8223 or you can find him at the Hell’s Bay Booth for the entire show.

GCAA Redfish Tour Mississippi Showdown
Posted by stardot on Friday, October 09 @ 06:02:20 MDT (74 reads)

By Barnie White

The last regular season Gulf Coast Angler’s Association event was held October 3rd out of Moss Point City Launch in Pascagoula, MS. Fourteen teams competed in less than favorable conditions. The wind was howling making accurate casts and locating fish a daunting task. But our world class anglers overcame the elements and brought in redfish despite Mother Nature’s adversity.

Gary Rettig, fishing by himself, took the first place spot and the Big Fish Pot with 11.09 lbs. and winning $1010. Rettig made a 73 mile one way run to the Biloxi marsh leaving him only two hours to find his winning fish. The key to his success was finding leeward banks and casting 3” Strike King Swim Baits.

Rettig stated that on several occasions he had taken waves over the bow and had considered giving up the trek but decided to forge on. Rettig is sponsored by AHR Metals (www.ahrmetals.com). This was Rettig’s fourth tournament with the GCAA and is making plans to fish the whole circuit in 2010.

In 2nd place (2nd consecutive time) was Capt. Chad Dufrene of Dufrene’s Guide Service (www.dufrenesguideservice.com) fishing with first time GCAA Angler Andy Eymard. Dufrene/Eymard also made a long run in their Yamaha powered Century bay boat to the Biloxi Marsh roughly 60 miles away.

The duo used Bayou Buck Spinnerbaits and Glup! Jerk Shad to catch there tournament limit of 2 reds weighing in at 10.80 lbs. Durene/Eymard collected $590 for their efforts.

Rounding out the top five were 3rd- Larry and Renee’ Kirby with 9.73 lbs., 4th – Richard Rutland and John Page with 9.63 lbs., and 5th Brandon Treadway and Chris Bush with 8.47 lbs.

The Team of the Year race concluded Saturday with the last regular season event leaving Bobby Abruscato and Scott Ritter at the top of the angler board. Ritter stated it was a hard fought battle against Paul Smith to win the honor but getting a win early in the year helped the team get enough points to make a few gambles that paid off big. Ritter also stated that he and Abruscato enjoyed the camaraderie of the GCAA, smoothness of operation by tournament officials, and the stiff competition our anglers offer.

Championship time is here! 18 teams have qualified for the 2 day event being held at Delta Marine in Empire, LA October 24th and 25th. There will be an awards ceremony Saturday night along with discussion about our 2010 season. Several prizes to be given away during the weekend including a Carrot Six Rod and a first place prize purse of $3,000 (including $500 thanks to Delta Marine).

IGFA IGFA Launches National Anglers’ Legacy Pledge Drive
Posted by stardot on Thursday, October 01 @ 04:16:02 MDT (65 reads)

Program support includes outreach to staff, members and Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum visitors

ALEXANDRIA, VA (October 1, 2009) – The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) today announced that the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) joins a growing list of partners who support and promote the Anglers’ Legacy program. Anglers’ Legacy, a national mission from the Take Me Fishing™ campaign, encourages outdoor enthusiasts to introduce newcomers to boating and fishing. IGFA will encourage staff, members, online visitors and guests to their Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum to “Take the Pledge” and introduce at least one new person to the sport.

“IGFA is a natural partner to spread the Anglers’ Legacy message to their network of professionals and avid boaters and anglers,” said RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson. “Ambassadors generate critical funds for conservation when they buy fishing licenses, tackle and equipment. By working together, we can motivate a new generation to get outside, be active and pass on the legacy of our beloved sport.”

IGFA’s Pledge drive will be promoted through editorial coverage, Web banners on IGFA.org, and public service announcements in the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum. Visitors to the museum will also be encouraged to take the Anglers’ Legacy Pledge on-site. By engaging more than 100,000 members and visitors in this national Pledge drive, IGFA expects to generate 20,000 Pledges over the coming year.

“Our vast network of IGFA Trustees, representatives and members have an incredibly broad reach and impact within the recreational fishing community,” said IGFA President Rob Kramer. “Accordingly, we are very excited about partnering with RBFF to perpetuate the sport, while encouraging the conservation of game fish and their habitat.”

Anglers’ Legacy has signed on more than 180,000 Ambassadors nationwide since its inception in May 2006. Based on a recent RBFF survey, Ambassadors purchase approximately $140 in fishing tackle and equipment, $153 in boating supplies and accessories, and more than three fishing licenses which support critical fish and wildlife management efforts through the Sport Fish Restoration Program.

About IGFA

IGFA is a nonprofit organization committed to the conservation of game fish and the promotion of responsible, ethical angling practices through science, education, rule making and record keeping.

About RBFF

RBFF is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase participation in recreational angling and boating, thereby protecting and restoring the nation’s aquatic natural resources. RBFF helps people discover, share and protect the legacy of boating and fishing through national outreach programs including the Take Me Fishing™ campaign and Anglers’ Legacy™.

2009 ESPN Redfish Cup Father-Son Top Redfish Cup Anglers
Posted by stardot on Monday, September 28 @ 10:02:38 MDT (56 reads)

story courtesy ESPN Redfish CUP
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- There was a moment after the scales settled Sunday when Kevin Broussard hugged his father and teammate Cajun Phil and allowed his emotions to wash over him.

The tears of joy that ran down his face capped off an amazing season for the Broussards. After claiming the Academy Sports + Outdoors Team of the Year presented by Crocs title in Biloxi at the final regular-season stop, the duo surprised the crowd in Pensacola by besting the final five teams to also be crowned kings of the Crown Royal Redfish Cup Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors with a final-day total of 9.27 pounds.

“This is unbelievable, I can’t describe what I’m feeling right now,” Kevin said. “I thought winning Team of the Year was as high was we could get. It’s hard to believe all that we have accomplished this year and it means even more fishing with my dad. There is no ego there, nothing but love.”

Day Two leaders and defending Cup champions Manny Perez and Paul Jueckstock ended the tournament in second place with 7.09 pounds. Jeff Totten and Ozzie Lessinger remained in third place after bringing in 5.91 pounds.

Mike Friday and Danny Latham settled for fourth, with 2.75 pounds and rounding out the top five was the team of Bo Johnson and Mike Del Duca, finishing fifth after they failed to weigh a keeper redfish.

In the end, the Broussards adjusted best to the high tides that seemed to scatter the fish, but after weighing in, they were skeptical that less than 10 pounds would claim the victory.

“We actually were content with finishing fifth,” Kevin said. “Today was a prime example of how much a top five can change. We even left our fish at 12:30 because we thought we needed to upgrade fishing closer to Pensacola.”

The Broussards focused on shallow areas and continued moving up as the water got higher, using Saltwater Assassin jigheads and plastics on a weightless popping cork. The key was varying the length of the cork, between 16 and 28 inches, based on the water level.

A costly miscue on the final day was the main factor for Jueckstock and Perez coming up just short in their bid to become the first team ever to win back-to-back Cup titles. The team had a good fish hit a bait, but when they hooked up with it, the redfish ran straight at the boat and spit the hook before Jueckstock could keep up with it.

“We had the winning fish on and it came off right next to the boat,” Jueckstock said. “I knew when that happened that we had just cost ourselves the Cup.”

After beginning the tournament with the biggest bag of 13.67 pounds, Jueckstock and Perez couldn’t continue to find the same quality fish as the tide rose over the course of the weekend.

Along with the championship trophies, Kevin and Cajun Phil Broussard walked away with the first-place prize of 50,000 dollars, a case of Mystik Lubricants JT4 marine oil and two bottles of Crown Royal XR.

2009 ESPN Redfish Cup One Minute Left
Posted by stardot on Monday, August 31 @ 19:22:44 MDT (87 reads)

Story by Redfish Cup Staff

BILOXI/D’IBERVILLE, Miss. -- The final regular season event in the 2009 Redfish Cup season came down to a matter of one minute.

Racing back to the check-in area, a long run from the Louisiana marshes, the father and son team of Chuck and C.J. Howard made it to the docks with one minute to spare. At the weigh-in they survived the other four teams to lay claim to their second Redfish Cup victory with a final-day total of 19.32 pounds.

"We are elated because people don’t realize how hard it is to win on this level," C.J. said. "These guys are professionals, the best of the best. We have regular jobs and are just happy to be here and get this chance."

Finishing just over a half-pound back in second place was Ken Chambers and John Merriwether with a two-fish bag of 18.78 pounds. Day Two leaders Charlie Thomason and Shane Pescay fell to third on the final day with 18.16 pounds.

Mike and Michael Frenette suffered boat trouble on Day Three and only managed to bring in 11.89 pounds to finish fourth. Brothers Bryan and Greg Watts decided against making a long run in windy conditions and caught 6.81 pounds to round out the top five in fifth place.

For winners C.J. and Chuck, the victory was especially emotional because they got to share the experience as a father and son team. After sitting in the "hot seat" for three teams to weigh in, the Howards got choked up on stage as the moment of victory sank in.

"If you can take your kids fishing -- sharing anything like that -- it is an important thing for a parent," C.J. said. "You can’t put a reward on these successes. Sharing this with Chuck and getting to relive these experiences is very special."

"I’ve had great partners in the past, but getting a chance to fish with my dad is outstanding," Chuck said. "We work and own a company together and fish together. He is an outstanding partner and a mentor."

Their victory was almost spoiled twice on the long run to and from Louisiana. The wind and rain was bad enough on the morning ride out that the Howards nearly didn’t make it. At one point, they were only running at 8 mph and the long journey to their primary area took close to 3 hours.

On the ride home it was a gesture of sportsmanship that almost cost them the win. The Howards picked up Michael Frenette after their boat broke down and all three continued to the weigh-in, arriving with one minute to spare.

Their on-time arrival pushed Chambers and Merriwether, the only team in the top five that hasn’t won on the Redfish Cup, to second place. The team was sharing a single deep-water hole with third-place finishers Thomason and Pescay, part of the arrangement the two teams have to share information across all Cup stops.

"Without the good graces of Thomason and Pescay, we wouldn’t be here," Chambers said. "Fishing was a little slower for both of us today because the current was slower. The wind direction affects current flow and today it was blowing against the incoming tide. The best fishing was early when the tide was strongest, we just didn’t have enough time."

Their high finish helped Chambers and Merriwether lock up a Championship berth, set for September in their home state of Florida.

Thomason and Pescay weren’t able to close out a wire-to-wire victory for the second tournament in a row, but they leave D’Iberville in possession of two Redfish Cup records. On Day One, the boated 23.08 pounds, a single-day record and their two-day total of 43.85 pounds was another record.

On not closing out the victory again after a second-place finish in Chalmette last month, Pescay replied, "We’ve got one more shot in Pensacola." The Academy Sports + Outdoors Team of the Year presented by Crocs was decided on Day Two in D’Iberville, with Kevin and Cajun Phil Broussard capturing the year-long crown and 10,000 dollar prize. The Watts brothers finished second, 13 points behind.

The final event of the season is the Redfish Cup Championship, set for September 25-27 in Pensacola, Fla. The top 20 teams after the four regular season event qualified and will battle it out next month.
